SUMMARY:LEGO Builders Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an hour of creative\, hands-on fun with building bricks aka LEGOs! Each month\, young builders can let their imaginations soar in a relaxed and playful environment. While a monthly theme and inspiration cards are available for those who need a little guidance\, kids are free to create whatever they dream up. Completed creations are proudly displayed in the library’s Youth Room for the entire month\, with a “Builder’s Card” showcasing the name of their creation and their name. \nThis program isn’t just about building with bricks—it’s about building skills! Play is a powerful tool for developing early literacy and motor skills. Through constructing\, designing\, and storytelling about their creations\, kids practice problem-solving\, spatial reasoning\, and expressive language—all critical for literacy development. \nFor younger siblings\, a selection of larger building blocks is available\, ensuring the whole family can participate and enjoy stress-free fun. A variety of build books are also on hand for inspiration and to check out. \nDrop in\, stay as long as you’d like\, and join the fun! \nThe four rules of Lego Club are: \n\nRespect the space.–No running around\, just sit and work on your piece.\nRespect others.–That means everyone has to share and help each other out.  Teamwork makes the dream work.\nRespect yourself.–Stay positive.  We don’t compete with or put down other club members; we build just for fun.\nRespect the Legos.–We don’t throw the Legos.  We don’t eat the Legos.  We don’t shove the Legos up our nose.  We don’t shove the Legos up our friend’s nose.  And the Legos have to stay in the library at the end of the day.

SUMMARY:Tales to Tails: Read to a Dog!
DESCRIPTION:Kids are invited to boost their reading confidence by reading aloud to a gentle\, trained therapy dog named Orla. Our Tales to Tails program offers a calm\, playful\, and nonjudgmental space where young readers can practice their skills\, build fluency\, and enjoy the company of a four-legged listener. \nReading to a dog makes learning feel like play which is essential to literacy development! Through play\, children engage their imagination\, build language skills\, and gain the confidence they need to become lifelong readers. \nPerfect for emerging and reluctant readers\, because dogs make the best audience! 📖 \nEach child may sign up for a 15-minute reading session with Orla during the program hour. \nKathleen Karl\, a registered therapy dog handler and seasoned educator with over 20 years of experience helping children become successful readers\, will be on hand to support young participants. Kids are welcome to bring their own book or choose one from the library. \n📅 When: Saturday\, February 28\, 2026🕥 Time: 10:30–11:30 AM \n🔖 Reserve your reading time with Orla by contacting Carrie King at youthlibrarian@whitinglibrary.org or calling 802-875-2277.

SUMMARY:Earth Day “Makedo” Cardboard Art Workshop with Local Chester Artist Kari Storm
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Whiting Library for a special hands-on art program featuring local artist Kari Storm\, whose sustainable 3D cardboard art exhibit—inspired by The Lion\, the Witch and the Wardrobe—will be on display during the program. Kari will share her creative process and show how everyday cardboard can be transformed into imaginative\, three-dimensional art. \nIf you can imagine that a cardboard cereal box can be something other than “just a box\,” then you’ll earn your license to “Makedo”! \nThanks to Kari’s generous donation\, the library will be adding Art Shaped: Sustainable 3D Art Projects to Kickstart Children’s Creativity by Darrell Wakelam and a Makedo Discovery Kit to our Library of Things. After the program\, families will be able to check out the library’s new Library of Things “Makedo” cardboard construction tools—made for kids to safely cut and connect cardboard to begin making 3D cardboard art at home. \nDuring the workshop\, kids may create a cardboard mask to take home. Anyone ages 7 and up is invited to participate. RSVP by clicking this link to reserve your spot at the table!  \nThis Earth Day program inspires creativity\, sustainability\, and imaginative thinking using low-cost\, readily available materials. \n📅 Wednesday\, April 22\, 2026\n 🕒 3:00–4:30 PM\n 📍 Whiting Library \nRSVP\, space is limited. Please call the library at 802-875-2277 or email Carrie at youthlibrarian@whitinglibrary.org to reserve your spot.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talks: On Writing Beloved Characters and Powerful Portrayals of Resilience in Virtual Conversation with Jason Reynolds
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER TO ATTEND LIVE EVENT: https://libraryc.org/whitinglibrary/148079/register \nWATCH RECORDING AFTER EVENT: https://libraryc.org/whitinglibrary/archive \n  \n\nJoin us in an online conversation with bestselling author Jason Reynolds on April 30th at 7 PM as we discuss his latest work\, Coach\, the fifth–and last–entry in the highly popular Track series. Following the immersive stories of Ghost\, Lu\, Patina\, and Sunny\, it’s finally time for Coach to shine in his own book as we discover: Who was Coach before he became an inspiring leader? \nBefore Coach was the man who gave caring yet firm-handed guidance to Ghost\, Lu\, Patina\, and Sunny on the Defenders track team\, he was little Otie Brody\, who was obsessed with Mr. 9.99 (a.k.a. Carl Lewis) and Marty McFly from Back to the Future. Like Mr. 9.99—and his own dad—Otie is a sprinter. Sprint free or die is practically his motto. \nThen his dad\, who is always away on business trips\, comes home with a pair of Jordans. JORDANS. Fine as fine can be. Otie puts them on and feels like he can leap to the moon…maybe even leap like Mr. 9.99 when he won the Olympic gold medal in the long jump. But one morning he wakes up to find his brand-new secret weapon kicks are missing—right off his feet! And Otie just might have a fuzzy memory of his dad easing them off as Otie was sleeping\, but that can’t be right\, can it? \nUnless all the reasons for his dad’s “gone’s” are very different from what he’s been told… Because now\, not only are the Jordans missing\, but so is his father. \nRegister now to join in on the online conversation about the final installment to Jason Reynold’s Track series! \nAbout the Author: Jason Reynolds is an award-winning and #1 New York Times bestselling author. Jason’s many books include Miles Morales: Spider Man\, the Track series (Ghost\, Patina\, Sunny\, and Lu)\, Long Way Down\, which received a Newbery Honor\, a Printz Honor\, and a Correta Scott King Honor\, and Look Both Ways\, which was a National Book Award Finalist. Recently named the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature\, Jason has appeared on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah\, Late Night with Seth Meyers\, and CBS This Morning. He is on faculty at Lesley University\, for the Writing for Young People MFA Program and lives in Washington\, DC. You can find his ramblings at JasonWritesBooks.com. \n

SUMMARY:Playgroup for Littles (0-3) & Caregivers
DESCRIPTION:Playgroup Update at Whiting Library. Reserve your spot here. \nOur Tuesday Morning Playgroup has grown into something truly special\, and I’m so grateful to see so many families connecting\, playing\, and learning together. It’s been wonderful to watch this community grow! \nWith that growth\, we’ve reached a point where a few changes will help keep playgroup a calm\, safe\, and engaging experience for everyone—especially our youngest participants. \nWhen playgroup resumes in April\, here’s what to expect: \n\nAttendance will be limited to 6 adults (with their children) per session\nAdvance sign-up will be required to help families plan ahead. RSVP here!\nDrop-ins may be welcomed only if space allows.\nPlaygroup is designed with children ages 0–3 in mind\n\nWe’ll prioritize reservations for families with children ages 3 and under.\nIf space allows\, families with older children are always welcome to join.\n\n\n\n\nThese adjustments will help create a more relaxed environment where little ones can explore\, play\, and build early literacy skills at their own pace. \nThank you for your understanding and for being such an important part of this growing playgroup community. Contact me\, your Youth Librarian\, for more information via youthlibrarian@whitinglibrary.org or call 802-875-2277.  \nWarmly\,\n Carrie\n Youth Services Librarian\n Whiting Library
