DESCRIPTION:Join us for an hour of creative\, hands-on fun with building bricks aka LEGOs! Each month\, young builders can let their imaginations soar in a relaxed and playful environment. While a monthly theme and inspiration cards are available for those who need a little guidance\, kids are free to create whatever they dream up. Completed creations are proudly displayed in the library’s Youth Room for the entire month\, with a “Builder’s Card” showcasing the name of their creation and their name. \nThis program isn’t just about building with bricks—it’s about building skills! Play is a powerful tool for developing early literacy and motor skills. Through constructing\, designing\, and storytelling about their creations\, kids practice problem-solving\, spatial reasoning\, and expressive language—all critical for literacy development. \nFor younger siblings\, a selection of larger building blocks is available\, ensuring the whole family can participate and enjoy stress-free fun. A variety of build books are also on hand for inspiration and to check out. \nDrop in\, stay as long as you’d like\, and join the fun! \nThe four rules of Lego Club are: \n\nRespect the space.–No running around\, just sit and work on your piece.\nRespect others.–That means everyone has to share and help each other out.  Teamwork makes the dream work.\nRespect yourself.–Stay positive.  We don’t compete with or put down other club members; we build just for fun.\nRespect the Legos.–We don’t throw the Legos.  We don’t eat the Legos.  We don’t shove the Legos up our nose.  We don’t shove the Legos up our friend’s nose.  And the Legos have to stay in the library at the end of the day.

Our Tales to Tails program offers a calm\, playful\, and nonjudgmental space where young readers can practice their skills\, build fluency\, and enjoy the company of a four-legged listener. \nReading to a dog makes learning feel like play which is essential to literacy development! Through play\, children engage their imagination\, build language skills\, and gain the confidence they need to become lifelong readers. \nPerfect for emerging and reluctant readers\, because dogs make the best audience! 📖 \nEach child may sign up for a 15-minute reading session with Orla during the program hour. \nKathleen Karl\, a registered therapy dog handler and seasoned educator with over 20 years of experience helping children become successful readers\, will be on hand to support young participants. Plus\, explore a special display of birding books curated for all ages. \nWe’ll also debut the library’s new Birding Backpacks\, a grab-and-go kit filled with tools to help you start observing birds. Patrons can also check out the library’s Sibley’s Birding Bingo game\, a bird-themed puzzle\, and a birding board game from our Library of Things for even more birding fun at home. \nThroughout March\, enter our raffle for a birding prize basket\, featuring a reusable water bottle\, bird-friendly coffee\, and reflective window tape designed to help prevent bird collisions. \nCome celebrate birds with the Whiting Library and learn simple ways to enjoy and protect them!

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Whiting Library for a special hands-on art program featuring local artist Kari Storm\, whose sustainable 3D cardboard art exhibit—inspired by The Lion\, the Witch and the Wardrobe—will be on display during the program. Kari will share her creative process and show how everyday cardboard can be transformed into imaginative\, three-dimensional art. \nIf you can imagine that a cardboard cereal box can be something other than “just a box\,” then you’ll earn your license to “Makedo”! \nThanks to Kari’s generous donation\, the library will be adding Art Shaped: Sustainable 3D Art Projects to Kickstart Children’s Creativity by Darrell Wakelam and a Makedo Discovery Kit to our Library of Things.
