DESCRIPTION:Saxtons River Art Guild members will exhibit their work at Whiting Library from Friday\, January 12\, to Friday\, February 1\, 2024. In case of snowy weather\, this exhibit opening will take place on Saturday\, January 20. \nHere are a few highlights about some of the presenting artists: John Dimick paints landscapes from various trails in New England and can be seen painting street scenes around Brattleboro on Gallery Walk nights; Kathy Greves paints a variety of subjects\, some plein air and others from photographs she has taken in and around Vermont and during her travels in France\, Italy\, Germany\, and the Bahamas; long time member Donna Lund paints regional landscapes either in watercolor or pastel; Liz Winchester-Larson works primarily in the still-life genre with rich color and intricate detail.

SUMMARY:All About the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:The total solar eclipse of April 8\, 2024\, is significant because it will be within a day’s drive of one of the most populous regions of our planet. \nSouthern Vermont Astronomy Group (SoVerA) member Claudio Véliz will discuss why we have a moon in the first place and why we are so fortunate as to experience these events. Then\, how to prepare for the eclipse\, where to be\, and what to do if it’s cloudy will all be covered. The presentation will be graphic-rich\, with additional material for those who wish to delve deeper into the subject matter. Safe solar-filtered glasses will be handed out to in-person attendees\, complete with instructions on how to use them. \nClaudio Véliz pursues dual professions in architecture and astronomy. He has owned an award-winning architecture firm – Claudio Véliz Architect PLLC/AIA – since 1982\, designing residential\, institutional\, municipal\, retail\, and corporate facilities. In his astronomy track\, he was Co-Founder and twice President of SoVerA\, headquartered in Chester\, Vermont. Now lecturing in the CALL Program at Keene State College\, New Hampshire\, previously he worked and lectured at New York’s Hayden Planetarium and the Astronomy Departments at Columbia University and Castleton University.

SUMMARY:Jigsaw Puzzle Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Are you a whiz at jigsaw puzzles? Join the challenge! On Saturday\, January 27\, at 10:30 a.m.\, three teams that register for the challenge in advance will be handed a sealed 500-piece jigsaw puzzle entitled “Story Time.” At exactly 10:30 a.m.\, each team will open their box and attempt to assemble their puzzle. The team that finishes first will win bragging rights and a gift certificate to a local Chester restaurant. Recommended for families with kids ages 12 and up. \nRules: \nTables will be set up around the library before the challenge\, and each team will be assigned a table. \nThere is space for three teams. \nTeams can comprise any number of people\, but only three people can work on the puzzle at any time. \nMembers can tag out and switch puzzlers every 30 minutes. \nTeams must sign up ahead of the event at the library or can send an email with their team name to the Youth Librarian\, Carrie King\, at youthlibrarian@whitinglibrary.org. \nThe challenge is over when the first team completes their puzzle. \nEach team is given the same sealed puzzle at the start of the challenge. \nSnacks and drinks will be provided to teams that are signed up for the challenge. \n
