SUMMARY:August 2021 Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club monthly discussion for August is being held in person at the library AND live on Zoom. The discussion will take place at 3pm on Wednesday\, August 18th\, 2021.  The book pick for August is The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes. From Wikipedia: \nThe Giver of Stars is a 2019 historical fiction novel by Jojo Moyes about packhorse librarians in a remote area of Kentucky. Set in Depression-era America\, The Giver of Stars is the story of five extraordinary women and their journey through the mountains of Kentucky and beyond. The women deliver library books to people in the mountains of Kentucky during the Great Depression\, a real-life program launched by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor. Universal Pictures has acquired the movie rights to The Giver of Stars\, and the feature film is in the early stages of production. \nThe Giver of Stars received USA Today’s top 100 books to read while stuck at home social distancing and was a Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick by Reese Witherspoon. The Giver of Stars spent 33 weeks on the New York Times best-selling list. \n\nPlease feel free to join the book club group any month\, all are welcome! SUMMARY:Summer Unplugged with The Nature Museum- Fairy Houses!
DESCRIPTION:Fairy House Building \nCalling all Fairies\, Elves & Imps! Fire up your imaginations by creating your own Fairy Village. We inspire students by teaching them some building basics\, showing them some inspiring examples and reading a fairy story. Then\, students take to the outdoors to create fairy houses\, parks\, gardens\, or whatever they’re inspired to build! We will take a look at each other’s  magical creations\, hear what inspired each creator\, and explore what they learned in their building process. This collaborative outdoor experience encourages creativity\, problem solving\, and taking a fresh look at nature’s small wonders. Some materials may be provided but bringing your own is encouraged! Note: Fairy houses will be built to remain where they are with natural materials that you bring and we provide. Please only bring biodegradable and native materials. \nThis will be an outdoor event\, rain date TBD. Please wear a mask and practice social distancing to keep kids safe! \nThe Nature Museum is a regional resource for nature\, science\, and environmental education in the Vermont and New Hampshire communities of the Connecticut River Valley. The Museum provides information and experiences that engage and enlighten our audiences and inspire stewardship of the natural world. Thanks to the generous support from Great River Hydro\, The Nature Museum is excited to once again bring free environmental education programming to public libraries throughout the Middle Connecticut River Valley and the Bellows Falls Fish Ladder and Visitor Center during the summer of 2021. These programs aim to be engaging and highlight topics related to the unique ecology and landscape of Northern New England. Unplug\, discover\, and learn!

SUMMARY:July 2021 Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club monthly discussion for July is being held in person at the library AND live on Zoom. The discussion will take place at 3pm on Wednesday\, July 21st\, 2021.  The book pick for July is The Martian by Andy Weir. This book was nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read. Here’s a blurb: \n\n“Six days ago\, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. \nNow\, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there. \nAfter a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead\, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out\, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. \nChances are\, though\, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery\, unforgiving environment\, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first. \nBut Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity\, his engineering skills—and a relentless\, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?” \nPlease feel free to join the group\, all are welcome! If you need a copy to read\, Whiting Library has copies ready to lend. Just give us a call or shoot us an email to reserve your copy. \nIf you have any questions or would like to get on the email list for the Book Club\, please contact Deirdre at the library. SUMMARY:June 2021 Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club is holding our monthly book discussion live on Zoom. The book pick for June is Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman. This novel published in 2007 centers on a blossoming romantic relationship between an intellectually precocious and curious 17-year-old American-Italian Jewish boy named Elio Perlman and a visiting 24-year-old American Jewish scholar named Oliver in 1980s Italy. The novel chronicles their summer romance and the 20 years that follow. The psychological maneuvers that accompany attraction have seldom been more shrewdly captured than in André Aciman’s frank\, unsentimental\, heartrending elegy to human passion.  \nPlease feel free to join the group\, all are welcome! If you need a copy to read\, Whiting Library has copies ready to lend. Just give us a call or shoot us an email and we will put it out for Front Porch Pick Up when available. \nIf you have any questions or would like to get on the email list for the Book Club\, please contact Deirdre at the library. You can email whitinglibrary1@gmail.com or call 875-2277. \n  \nThe Zoom Meeting login information is here: \nTopic: Whiting Library Book Club\nTime: April 20 2021 06:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81900041488 \nMeeting ID: 819 0004 1488

SUMMARY:May 2021 Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club holds our monthly discussions live on Zoom on the third Tuesday of each month. The book pick for May is The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. We will gather on Zoom on Tuesday\, May 18th at 6pm to talk all about it. \n“The Woman in White is Wilkie Collins’s fifth published novel\, written in 1859. It is considered to be among the first mystery novels and is widely regarded as one of the first (and finest) in the genre of “sensation novels”. The story is sometimes considered an early example of detective fiction with protagonist Walter Hartright employing many of the sleuthing techniques of later private detectives.”\nWikipedia \n“The novel famously begins with Walter Hartright’s eerie encounter with The Woman in White on a moonlit London road. Engaged as a drawing master to the beautiful Laura Fairley and her half-sister Marian Halcombe\, Walter becomes embroiled in the sinister intrigues of Sir Percival Glyde and his friend Count Fosco. The ‘charming’ Count Fosco has a taste for vanilla bonbons\, white mice and poison. Pursuing questions of identity and insanity along the corridors of English country houses\, The Woman in White is blend of Gothic horror and psychological thriller.”\nBook review from The Literary Circle \nPlease feel free to join the group\, all are welcome! If you need a copy to read\, Whiting Library has copies ready to lend. Just give us a call or shoot us an email and we will put it out for Front Porch Pick Up when available. \nIf you have any questions or would like to get on the email list for the Book Club\, please contact Deirdre at the library.
