SUMMARY:October 2021 Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club monthly discussion for October is being held in person at the library AND simultaneously live on Zoom. The discussion will take place at 3pm on Wednesday\, October 20th\, 2021.  The book pick for October is Devil in the White City: Murder\, Magic\, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson.  \nPlease feel free to join the book club group any month\, all are welcome! If you need a copy to read\, Whiting Library has copies ready to lend. Just give us a call or shoot us an email to reserve your copy. \nIf you have any questions or would like to get on the email list for the Book Club\, please contact Deirdre at the library. You can email whitinglibrary1@gmail.com or call 875-2277. \n  \nAbout the book from Goodreads: \nAuthor Erik Larson imbues the incredible events surrounding the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair with such drama that readers may find themselves checking the book’s categorization to be sure that ‘The Devil in the White City’ is not\, in fact\, a highly imaginative novel. Larson tells the stories of two men: Daniel H. Burnham\, the architect responsible for the fair’s construction\, and H.H. Holmes\, a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor. \nBurnham’s challenge was immense. In a short period of time\, he was forced to overcome the death of his partner and numerous other obstacles to construct the famous “White City” around which the fair was built. His efforts to complete the project\, and the fair’s incredible success\, are skillfully related along with entertaining appearances by such notables as Buffalo Bill Cody\, Susan B. Anthony\, and Thomas Edison. \nThe activities of the sinister Dr. Holmes\, who is believed to be responsible for scores of murders around the time of the fair\, are equally remarkable. He devised and erected the World’s Fair Hotel\, complete with crematorium and gas chamber\, near the fairgrounds and used the event as well as his own charismatic personality to lure victims. \nCombining the stories of an architect and a killer in one book\, mostly in alternating chapters\, seems like an odd choice but it works. The magical appeal and horrifying dark side of 19th-century Chicago are both revealed through Larson’s skillful writing. – John Moe \n  \nThe Zoom Meeting login information is here: \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81900041488 \nMeeting ID: 819 0004 1488

SUMMARY:September 2021 Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club monthly discussion for September is being held in person at the library AND simultaneously live on Zoom. The discussion will take place at 3pm on Wednesday\, September 15th\, 2021.  The book pick for September is Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell.  \nPlease feel free to join the book club group any month\, all are welcome! You can email whitinglibrary1@gmail.com or call 875-2277. \nAbout Hamnet from Amazon: \nNEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD \n“Of all the stories that argue and speculate about Shakespeare’s life… here is a novel … so gorgeously written that it transports you.” —The Boston Globe \nIn 1580’s England\, during the Black Plague a young Latin tutor falls in love with an extraordinary\, eccentric young woman in this “exceptional historical novel” (The New Yorker) and best-selling winner of the Women’s Prize for Fiction. \nAgnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer\, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast\, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband\, whose career on the London stage is taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever. \nA luminous portrait of a marriage\, a shattering evocation of a family ravaged by grief and loss\, and a tender and unforgettable re-imagining of a boy whose life has been all but forgotten\, and whose name was given to one of the most celebrated plays of all time\, Hamnet is mesmerizing\, seductive\, impossible to put down—a magnificent leap forward from one of our most gifted novelists. \n  \nThe Zoom Meeting login information is here: \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81900041488 \nMeeting ID: 819 0004 1488

SUMMARY:July 2021 Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club monthly discussion for July is being held in person at the library AND live on Zoom. The discussion will take place at 3pm on Wednesday\, July 21st\, 2021.  The book pick for July is The Martian by Andy Weir. This book was nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read. Here’s a blurb: \n\n“Six days ago\, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. \nNow\, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there. \nAfter a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead\, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out\, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. \nChances are\, though\, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery\, unforgiving environment\, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first. \nBut Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity\, his engineering skills—and a relentless\, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?” \nPlease feel free to join the group\, all are welcome! If you need a copy to read\, Whiting Library has copies ready to lend. Just give us a call or shoot us an email to reserve your copy. \nIf you have any questions or would like to get on the email list for the Book Club\, please contact Deirdre at the library. SUMMARY:June 2021 Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club is holding our monthly book discussion live on Zoom. The book pick for June is Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman. This novel published in 2007 centers on a blossoming romantic relationship between an intellectually precocious and curious 17-year-old American-Italian Jewish boy named Elio Perlman and a visiting 24-year-old American Jewish scholar named Oliver in 1980s Italy. The novel chronicles their summer romance and the 20 years that follow. The psychological maneuvers that accompany attraction have seldom been more shrewdly captured than in André Aciman’s frank\, unsentimental\, heartrending elegy to human passion.  \nPlease feel free to join the group\, all are welcome! If you need a copy to read\, Whiting Library has copies ready to lend. SUMMARY:Summer Unplugged with The Nature Museum- Busy Beavers!
DESCRIPTION:Busy Beavers – One of Nature’s Extraordinary Architects \nDid you know that the North American beaver is one of the largest rodents in the world and an “architect”? These tree-chewing creatures are truly incredible and can be found all throughout New England. Come learn more about their way of life and how they change the landscape to create a home for them and other critters. Observe real beaver biofacts\, listen to a story\, and learn how to build your own beaver dam at home. \nThis will be an outdoor event\, rain date TBD. Please wear a mask and practice social distancing to keep kids safe! \nThe Nature Museum is a regional resource for nature\, science\, and environmental education in the Vermont and New Hampshire communities of the Connecticut River Valley. The Museum provides information and experiences that engage and enlighten our audiences and inspire stewardship of the natural world. Thanks to the generous support from Great River Hydro\, The Nature Museum is excited to once again bring free environmental education programming to public libraries throughout the Middle Connecticut River Valley and the Bellows Falls Fish Ladder and Visitor Center during the summer of 2021. These programs aim to be engaging and highlight topics related to the unique ecology and landscape of Northern New England. Unplug\, discover\, and learn!
