SUMMARY:Local Food and Fuel Assistance Info Session- 100% Campaign!
DESCRIPTION:Two local organizations – Senior Solutions and the Chester-Andover Family Center – have come together to launch a campaign to ensure that 100% of residents of those towns are both food and fuel secure as we enter the winter months. \nDo you have questions about what food and fuel benefits are available and how to apply for them? Whiting Library is hosting two info sessions this December to answer all your questions. Come to the library during the following times to meet with Thom Simmons from Senior Solutions and the Chester-Andover 100% Campaign: \nWednesday\, December 8th\, from 4 pm to 6 pm at Whiting Library \nSaturday\, December 11th\, from 10 am to 12pm at Whiting Library \n  \nDuring early December\, every household in Chester and Andover will receive a letter from the Chester-Andover 100% Campaign briefly describing on-going programs that provide help with food and fuel resources locally. Included in the letter will be a 4 x 9 card listing the contact information of the organizations and services provided by each. This information will also be made available at town institutions\, churches\, and Whiting Library. \nThom Simmons\, Outreach Specialist for Senior Solutions\, noted that “More than 60% of our local seniors who are eligible for food and fuel benefits do not participate in these programs. The Fuel Assistance program alone can provide up to $3\,000 annually to help people with their fuel bills\, and that’s a lot of money to be ‘leaving on the table’ during a Vermont winter. We want people to understand that participation in these programs helps strengthen local communities and their economies.  More than 9 million dollars is added to the Vermont economy each month through the 3SquaresVT program alone\, and that doesn’t even include the multiplying effect of those dollars throughout the community.” \nThom will be holding ‘open hours’ to answer any questions residents may have related to the 3SquaresVT food benefits and Fuel Assistance programs at the following locations: \nFriday\, Dec. 3\, from 10 am to Noon at the Chester-Andover Family Center \nWednesday\, Dec 8\, from 4 pm to 6 pm at Whiting Library in Chester \nSaturday\, Dec 11\, from 10 am to Noon at Whiting Library in Chester \nFriday\, Dec 17\, from 10 am to Noon at the Chester-Andover Family Center \n  \nChester-Andover Food Shelf and Thrift Shop Hours Change \nThe timing of the campaign coincides with the change in hours at the CAFC\, which offers nutritious food\, affordable clothing and household goods\, and provides financial assistance. Beginning in December\, the Food Shelf will be open Thursdays from 1 pm to 4 pm\, and Fridays 10 am to 2 pm\, with fresh produce every Friday. DESCRIPTION:Start Writing\, Keep Writing: A Writing Workshop for Teens at Whiting Library \nHigh school students with an interest in creative writing are invited to attend a Teen Writers Workshop at Whiting Library on Wednesday\, December 1\, 2021 from 4:30 p.m.to 5:45 p.m. at 117 Main Street in Chester. This newly formed group of like-minded writers and creative souls invites teens to join this workshop held on the first Wednesday of the month at Whiting Library. Perfect for new writers as well as writers who want to explore multiple genres and work on development of their craft\, voice and editorial skills. \nA mix of free-writing and sharing\, the workshop will develop writing skills and practices in a supportive and welcoming environment. Participants should bring a notebook and a written piece they are currently working on\, or planning to start. Teen writers of fiction\, non-fiction\, and poetry are invited to attend.  \n“We had a great\, first workshop last month\, where a nice group of young writers gathered to share their writing and work on new skills. DESCRIPTION:Join the Great Vermont Dragon Egg Hunt!\nThis fall\, Whiting Library is excited to take part in the Great Vermont Dragon Egg Hunt! Everyone is invited to join in this fun\, outdoor library game. A magic dragon has built a nest on the disc golf course in Chester and laid her eggs in it. Now she challenges you to take a hike and try to collect one of her eggs! You will visit unique locations by following picture clues that lead you around the disc golf course starting at the ice rink parking area at the Pinnacle on Lover’s Lane. \nFind the dragon’s nest and bring 1 paper egg back to the library to be entered in a raffle to win a Dragon Puppet and her real egg! Participants must be 16 or younger to win the raffle. You can email whitinglibrary1@gmail.com or call 875-2277. \n  \nAbout the book from Goodreads: \nAuthor Erik Larson imbues the incredible events surrounding the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair with such drama that readers may find themselves checking the book’s categorization to be sure that ‘The Devil in the White City’ is not\, in fact\, a highly imaginative novel. Larson tells the stories of two men: Daniel H. Burnham\, the architect responsible for the fair’s construction\, and H.H. Holmes\, a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor. \nBurnham’s challenge was immense. In a short period of time\, he was forced to overcome the death of his partner and numerous other obstacles to construct the famous “White City” around which the fair was built. His efforts to complete the project\, and the fair’s incredible success\, are skillfully related along with entertaining appearances by such notables as Buffalo Bill Cody\, Susan B. Anthony\, and Thomas Edison. \nThe activities of the sinister Dr. Holmes\, who is believed to be responsible for scores of murders around the time of the fair\, are equally remarkable. He devised and erected the World’s Fair Hotel\, complete with crematorium and gas chamber\, near the fairgrounds and used the event as well as his own charismatic personality to lure victims. \nCombining the stories of an architect and a killer in one book\, mostly in alternating chapters\, seems like an odd choice but it works. SUMMARY:Whiting Library Book Sale
DESCRIPTION:Whiting Library’s Annual Book Sale will take place on the library lawn at 117 Main St. on Saturday\, September 18th and Sunday\, September 19th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, or until all the books are sold! The Book Sale will take place in collaboration with the Chester Festival on the Green\, making this event an incredible time to come to Main St. to experience heaps of Chester fun. \nThe Book Sale is comprised of donated materials and books withdrawn from the library collection. We have a little bit of everything: from adult fiction to non-fiction\, biographies to gardening\, art books to histories\, picture books to activity books. Everyone will find something to read and entertain! All sales are by donation\, with your generous contributions going directly to benefit the library. We use this fundraiser for the purchase of new books and materials\, arts and crafts supplies for our weekly kid’s activities\, to upgrade library technology\, and so much more. Please come out and support the library and attend this great event. \nIf you would like to donate books for the sale\, please read the donation policy on our website first. We are looking for clean\, new books and are accepting donations during our regular open hours until September 10th. Please no musty\, moldy\, old\, or damaged books. We do not take encyclopedias\, dictionaries\, travel guides\, textbooks\, workbooks\, tapes or cassettes. Thank you so much for following these guidelines\, we appreciation your support. \nWe are also looking for volunteers to help out during the sale! We will take a look at each other’s  magical creations\, hear what inspired each creator\, and explore what they learned in their building process. This collaborative outdoor experience encourages creativity\, problem solving\, and taking a fresh look at nature’s small wonders. Some materials may be provided but bringing your own is encouraged! Note: Fairy houses will be built to remain where they are with natural materials that you bring and we provide. Please only bring biodegradable and native materials. \nThis will be an outdoor event\, rain date TBD. Please wear a mask and practice social distancing to keep kids safe! \nThe Nature Museum is a regional resource for nature\, science\, and environmental education in the Vermont and New Hampshire communities of the Connecticut River Valley. The Museum provides information and experiences that engage and enlighten our audiences and inspire stewardship of the natural world. Thanks to the generous support from Great River Hydro\, The Nature Museum is excited to once again bring free environmental education programming to public libraries throughout the Middle Connecticut River Valley and the Bellows Falls Fish Ladder and Visitor Center during the summer of 2021. These programs aim to be engaging and highlight topics related to the unique ecology and landscape of Northern New England. Unplug\, discover\, and learn!
