SUMMARY:Whiting Library Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club is holding our monthly book discussion at the library in the community room (masks required!) and simultaneously live on Zoom. The book for March is The Secret History of Home Economics by Danielle Dreilinger. \nFrom Amazon: \nThe surprising\, often fiercely feminist\, always fascinating\, yet barely known\, history of home economics. \nThe term “home economics” may conjure traumatic memories of lopsided hand-sewn pillows or sunken muffins. But common conception obscures the story of the revolutionary science of better living. The field exploded opportunities for women in the twentieth century by reducing domestic work and providing jobs as professors\, engineers\, chemists\, and businesspeople. And it has something to teach us today. \nIn the surprising\, often fiercely feminist and always fascinating The Secret History of Home Economics\, Danielle Dreilinger traces the field’s history from Black colleges to Eleanor Roosevelt to Okinawa\, from a Betty Crocker brigade to DIY techies. These women―and they were mostly women―became chemists and marketers\, studied nutrition\, health\, and exercise\, tested parachutes\, created astronaut food\, and took bold steps in childhood development and education. \nHome economics followed the currents of American culture even as it shaped them. Dreilinger brings forward the racism within the movement along with the strides taken by women of color who were influential leaders and innovators. She also looks at the personal lives of home economics’ women\, as they chose to be single\, share lives with other women\, or try for egalitarian marriages. \nThis groundbreaking and engaging history restores a denigrated subject to its rightful importance\, as it reminds us that everyone should learn how to cook a meal\, balance their account\, and fight for a better world. \n\nIf you have any questions or would like to get on the email list for the Book Club\, please contact Deirdre at the library. You can email whitinglibrary1@gmail.com or call 875-2277.

SUMMARY:Golden Dome Book Club for Kids
DESCRIPTION:This book club meets on the second Wednesday of each month. It is geared towards kids ages 9 and up. Book club members can read any of the books from the Golden Dome Book list. Come to the library and check one out! Then come talk about the book and decide to either recommend it or not to the group. The group could also decide to all read the same book and have a group discussion. \nHere is a list of the 2021-2022 Golden Dome award nominees to choose from. \nThe Vermont Golden Dome Book Award (formerly the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award) was created to honor excellence in children’s literature. Each year since 1957\, Vermont students in grades four through eight have selected their favorite book from a list of nominees. It is recommended that students read at least five of the year’s nominated titles before voting. Voting takes place in the spring\, generally beginning in April.

SUMMARY:Whiting Library Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club is holding our monthly book discussion at the library in the community room (masks required!) and simultaneously live on Zoom. The book for January is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. \n\nFahrenheit 451 is a 1953 dystopian novel by American writer Ray Bradbury. Often regarded as one of his best works\, the novel presents a future American society where books are outlawed and “firemen” burn any that are found. The book’s tagline explains the title as “the temperature at which book paper catches fire\, and burns”: the autoignition temperature of paper. The lead character\, Guy Montag\, is a fireman who becomes disillusioned with his role of censoring literature and destroying knowledge\, eventually quitting his job and committing himself to the preservation of literary and cultural writings. \n\nIf you have any questions or would like to get on the email list for the Book Club\, please contact Deirdre at the library. SUMMARY:Kid's Golden Dome Book Club
DESCRIPTION:This book club is geared towards kids ages 9 and up. Book club members can read any of the books from the Golden Dome Book list and discuss it and recommend or not. The group could also decide to all read the same book and have a group discussion. \nHere is a list of the 2021-2022 Golden Dome award nominees to choose from. \nThe Vermont Golden Dome Book Award* (formerly the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award) was created to honor excellence in children’s literature. Each year since 1957\, Vermont students in grades four through eight have selected their favorite book from a list of nominees. It is recommended that students read at least five of the year’s nominated titles before voting. Voting takes place in the spring\, generally beginning in April. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club monthly discussion for December is being held in person at the library in the community room AND simultaneously live on Zoom. The discussion will take place at 3pm on Wednesday\, December 15th\, 2021.  The book pick for December is The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George.  \nPlease feel free to join the book club group any month\, all are welcome! If you need a copy to read\, Whiting Library has copies ready to lend. Just give us a call or shoot us an email to reserve your copy. \nIf you have any questions or would like to get on the email list for the Book Club\, please contact Deirdre at the library. But can he fix his own? \nMonsieur Perdu calls himself a literary apothecary. From his floating bookstore in a barge on the Seine\, he prescribes novels for the hardships of life. Using his intuitive feel for the exact book a reader needs\, Perdu mends broken hearts and souls. The only person he can’t seem to heal through literature is himself; he’s still haunted by heartbreak after his great love disappeared. She left him with only a letter\, which he has never opened. \nAfter Perdu is finally tempted to read the letter\, he hauls anchor and departs on a mission to the south of France\, hoping to make peace with his loss and discover the end of the story. Joined by a bestselling but blocked author and a lovelorn Italian chef\, Perdu travels along the country’s rivers\, dispensing his wisdom and his books\, showing that the literary world can take the human soul on a journey to heal itself. \nInternationally bestselling and filled with warmth and adventure\, The Little Paris Bookshop is a love letter to books\, meant for anyone who believes in the power of stories to shape people’s lives. \n

SUMMARY:Local Food and Fuel Assistance Info Session- 100% Campaign!
DESCRIPTION:Two local organizations – Senior Solutions and the Chester-Andover Family Center – have come together to launch a campaign to ensure that 100% of residents of those towns are both food and fuel secure as we enter the winter months. \nDo you have questions about what food and fuel benefits are available and how to apply for them? Whiting Library is hosting two info sessions this December to answer all your questions. Come to the library during the following times to meet with Thom Simmons from Senior Solutions and the Chester-Andover 100% Campaign: \nWednesday\, December 8th\, from 4 pm to 6 pm at Whiting Library \nSaturday\, December 11th\, from 10 am to 12pm at Whiting Library \n  \nDuring early December\, every household in Chester and Andover will receive a letter from the Chester-Andover 100% Campaign briefly describing on-going programs that provide help with food and fuel resources locally. Included in the letter will be a 4 x 9 card listing the contact information of the organizations and services provided by each. This information will also be made available at town institutions\, churches\, and Whiting Library. \nThom Simmons\, Outreach Specialist for Senior Solutions\, noted that “More than 60% of our local seniors who are eligible for food and fuel benefits do not participate in these programs. The Fuel Assistance program alone can provide up to $3\,000 annually to help people with their fuel bills\, and that’s a lot of money to be ‘leaving on the table’ during a Vermont winter. We want people to understand that participation in these programs helps strengthen local communities and their economies.  More than 9 million dollars is added to the Vermont economy each month through the 3SquaresVT program alone\, and that doesn’t even include the multiplying effect of those dollars throughout the community.” \nThom will be holding ‘open hours’ to answer any questions residents may have related to the 3SquaresVT food benefits and Fuel Assistance programs at the following locations: \nFriday\, Dec. 3\, from 10 am to Noon at the Chester-Andover Family Center \nWednesday\, Dec 8\, from 4 pm to 6 pm at Whiting Library in Chester \nSaturday\, Dec 11\, from 10 am to Noon at Whiting Library in Chester \nFriday\, Dec 17\, from 10 am to Noon at the Chester-Andover Family Center \n  \nChester-Andover Food Shelf and Thrift Shop Hours Change \nThe timing of the campaign coincides with the change in hours at the CAFC\, which offers nutritious food\, affordable clothing and household goods\, and provides financial assistance. Beginning in December\, the Food Shelf will be open Thursdays from 1 pm to 4 pm\, and Fridays 10 am to 2 pm\, with fresh produce every Friday. The Thrift Shop will expand their hours to three days each week\, opening on Thursdays from 1 pm to 4 pm\, Fridays 10 am to 4 pm\, and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm. \n  \nThe agencies can be contacted directly as follows: \nChester-Andover Family Center:  802-875-3236 or email cafc302@gmail.com \nSenior Solutions HelpLine: 802-885-2669
