SUMMARY:Green Up/Seed Down Outdoor Event
DESCRIPTION:On May 1st\, 2021\, Whiting Library is throwing our 2nd annual Green Up Day celebration on the front lawn of the library at 117 Main St. from 10am-2pm. This fun event is for all ages and one of the venues in Chester where you can pick up your special green trash bag for the 51st annual Vermont Green Up Day. Join us and get involved with this much-loved\, spring clean-up tradition that activates thousands of Vermonters to take care of their communities by picking up roadside litter. Keeping our environment clean is good for our health\, good for businesses\, and good for our property values. Together we build pride in our cities and towns and teach our youth about powerful civic engagement that affects climate change. \nThis event will also feature a hands on seed planting demonstration and activity area for anyone who wants to plant some seeds to bring home. We will have flowers and herbs you can plant in biodegradable containers that transfer directly to your garden when the ground is ready for gardening. There will also be a small selection of already sprouted seedlings for anyone wanting a sure thing to bring home! \nDuring this outdoor event\, we will bring out as many books from the basement book sale as we can carry in order to do a little spring cleaning. The book sale will be by donation and all proceeds from the sale will go towards buying materials and supplies for the library. Come with a reusable bag to load up with great reads from out book sale\, including fiction and non-fiction for both adults and children. \nLet’s celebrate Green Up Day together!

SUMMARY:April Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club holds our monthly discussions live on Zoom on the third Tuesday of each month. The book pick for April is Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. We will gather on Zoom on Tuesday\, April 20th at 6pm to talk all about it. \n“Fifteen-year-old Kambili and her older brother Jaja lead a privileged life in Enugu\, Nigeria. They live in a beautiful house\, with a caring family\, and attend an exclusive missionary school. They’re completely shielded from the troubles of the world. Yet\, as Kambili reveals in her tender-voiced account\, things are less perfect than they appear. Although her Papa is generous and well respected\, he is fanatically religious and tyrannical at home—a home that is silent and suffocating. \nAs the country begins to fall apart under a military coup\, Kambili and Jaja are sent to their aunt\, a university professor outside the city\, where they discover a life beyond the confines of their father’s authority. Books cram the shelves\, curry and nutmeg permeate the air\, and their cousins’ laughter rings throughout the house. When they return home\, tensions within the family escalate\, and Kambili must find the strength to keep her loved ones together. \nPurple Hibiscus is an exquisite novel about the emotional turmoil of adolescence\, the powerful bonds of family\, and the bright promise of freedom” (from Goodreads) \nPlease feel free to join the group\, all are welcome! If you need a copy to read\, Whiting Library has copies ready to lend. Just give us a call or shoot us an email and we will put it out for Front Porch Pick Up when available. \nIf you have any questions or would like to get on the email list for the Book Club\, please contact Deirdre at the library. You can email whitinglibrary1@gmail.com or call 875-2277. \nThe Zoom Meeting login information is here: \nTopic: Whiting Library Book Club\nTime: April 20 2021 06:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81900041488 \nMeeting ID: 819 0004 1488

SUMMARY:National Library Week
DESCRIPTION:Whiting Library celebrates National Library Week from April 4-10th\, 2021! This important week highlights the essential role libraries\, librarians and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. First sponsored in 1958\, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries of all types across the country each April. The theme for this year’s National Library Week is “Welcome to Your Library\,” which promotes the idea that libraries extend far beyond the four walls of a building and that everyone is welcome to use their services. \nAs a thank you to all our patrons\, Whiting Library will be handing out a coupon for a free book from our book sale for every check out request for Front Porch Pick Up this week. Simply give us a call at 875-2277 or send an email to whitinglibrary1@gmail.com to request items to check out. You can also browse the library catalog online and make requests directly there. Library staff is happy to make recommendations\, print or copy documents\, answer reference questions\, and assist you with all your library needs. Staff are available during all our regular open hours. \nThere are two special days during National Library Week we want to highlight. First is April 6th\, which is Library Workers Day. On Library Workers Day the staff of Whiting will put our feet up and take a spa day\, just kidding\, we’ll be doing the work we love in the library as usual! You can celebrate Library Worker Day by telling us your stories about helpful\, informative\, or fun interactions you have had with Whiting staff. We would love to hear how the library staff has helped you out in whatever small way. You can fill out a form on our front porch or website\, or just send us an email (or letter!) with your story. \nThe second special day is Library Giving Day on April 7th. Library Giving Day is a one day online fundraising push to help the library reach our annual $18\,000 fundraising goal. This is essential money we use to purchase books and resources\, subscribe to online services\, offer engaging programs\, feed the fish\, and so much more. We are deeply grateful for all of the community members who make the library run with your donations each year. Consider making Library Giving Day your chance to honor the library by using the yellow donation button on our homepage at www.whitinglibrary.org. We are looking forward to celebrating this special week with you!

SUMMARY:March Book Club Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club holds our monthly discussions live on Zoom on the third Tuesday of each month. The book pick for March is The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee. We will gather on Zoom on Tuesday\, March 16th at 6pm to talk all about it. \n“By day\, seventeen-year-old Jo Kuan works as a lady’s maid for the cruel daughter of one of the wealthiest men in Atlanta. But by night\, Jo moonlights as the pseudonymous author of a newspaper advice column for the genteel Southern lady\, “Dear Miss Sweetie.” \nWhen her column becomes wildly popular—and wildly criticized—Jo finds a mysterious letter that sets her off on a search for her own past and the parents who abandoned her. But when her efforts put her in the crosshairs of Atlanta’s most notorious criminal\, Jo must decide whether she’s ready to come out of hiding in plain sight and step into the light.” \nPlease feel free to join the group\, all are welcome! If you need a copy to read\, Whiting Library will have copies ready to lend. Just give us a call or shoot us an email and we will put it out for Front Porch Pick Up when available. \nIf you have any questions or would like to get on the email list for the Book Club\, please contact Deirdre at the library.
