SUMMARY:Whiting Library Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club is holding our monthly book discussion at the library in the community room (masks required!) and simultaneously live on Zoom. The book for May is Anxious People by Fredrick Backman. Copies are available at the library right now! All are welcome to attend whether this is your first book club ever or you were born at a book club. We love to talk books! \nIf you have any questions or would like to get on the email list for the Book Club\, please contact Deirdre at the library. You can email whitinglibrary1@gmail.com or call 875-2277. \nHere is a description of this month’s book: \nFrom the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove comes a charming\, poignant novel about a crime that never took place\, a would-be bank robber who disappears into thin air\, and eight extremely anxious strangers who find they have more in common than they ever imagined. \nLooking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation\, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything\, from where they want to live to how they met in the first place. Add to the mix an eighty-seven-year-old woman who has lived long enough not to be afraid of someone waving a gun in her face\, a flustered but still-ready-to-make-a-deal real estate agent\, and a mystery man who has locked himself in the apartment’s only bathroom\, and you’ve got the worst group of hostages in the world. \nEach of them carries a lifetime of grievances\, hurts\, secrets\, and passions that are ready to boil over. None of them is entirely who they appear to be. And all of them—the bank robber included—desperately crave some sort of rescue. As the authorities and the media surround the premises these reluctant allies will reveal surprising truths about themselves and set in motion a chain of events so unexpected that even they can hardly explain what happens next.

SUMMARY:Green Up Day!
DESCRIPTION:On May 7th\, 2022\, Whiting Library is throwing our 3rd annual Green Up Day celebration on the front lawn of the library at 117 Main St. from 10am-2pm. This fun event is for all ages and one of the venues in Chester where you can pick up your special green trash bag for the 52nd annual Vermont Green Up Day. Join us and get involved with this much-loved\, spring clean-up tradition that activates thousands of Vermonters to take care of their communities by picking up roadside litter. Keeping our environment clean is good for our health\, good for businesses\, and good for our property values. Together we build pride in our cities and towns and teach our youth about powerful civic engagement that affects climate change. \nThis event will also feature a hands on seed planting demonstration and activity area for anyone who wants to plant some seeds to bring home. The Seed Library\, a free seed exchange\, sponsored by the Mountain Valley Climate Action group will be all stocked up and ready for your gardening adventures. Come get seeds or bring seeds that you have. It’s an exchange either way! \nDuring this outdoor event\, we will bring out as many books from the basement book sale as we can carry in order to do a little spring cleaning. The book sale will be by donation and all proceeds from the sale will go towards buying materials and supplies for the library. Come with a reusable bag to load up with great reads from out book sale\, including fiction and non-fiction for both adults and children. \nLet’s celebrate Green Up Day together!

SUMMARY:Stone Village Poetry Experience Slam
DESCRIPTION:Last Chance to Enjoy the Slam Poets! \nMark your calendars: the final Stone Village Poetry Experience Slam will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, May 5. \nJoin the authors who’ve been reading and the poetry lovers who’ve been enjoying the readings at the First Universalist Parish of Chester (211 North St). But\, this being the final of the slams\, there’ll be more: poets who have read and been judged during all three events will be awarded first\, second and third prizes by the judges who will be—as they always are—picked from the audience. \nAnd\, as always\, the event will begin and end with non-competitive poets reading from their works. \nBy all accounts\, the evenings have been a great success. Poets have ranged in age from high-school students to retirees\, and poems have ranged in topics from lust\, love and loss to hopes and homelessness. \nThe events have been sponsored by the First Universalist Parish and Chester’s Whiting Library. Some of the poems have been refined at the Poetry Workshops that have been held as part of the Stone Village Poetry Experience. The final workshop will be held at the library (177 Main St) at 7 p.m. on May 19. \nFor more information\, contact slam-master Tuck Wunderle at Tuckerman@terrigenous.com or Deirdre Doran at whitinglibrary1@gmail.com \n\nTo attend the Poetry Slam on Zoom: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89720546568?pwd=aWpmZXNINlNnVkl4K1pJSkZmMHdidz09 \nEnter the passcode: poetry

SUMMARY:Whiting Library Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club is holding our monthly book discussion at the library in the community room (masks required!) and simultaneously live on Zoom. The book for March is The Secret History of Home Economics by Danielle Dreilinger. \nFrom Amazon: \nThe surprising\, often fiercely feminist\, always fascinating\, yet barely known\, history of home economics. \nThe term “home economics” may conjure traumatic memories of lopsided hand-sewn pillows or sunken muffins. But common conception obscures the story of the revolutionary science of better living. The field exploded opportunities for women in the twentieth century by reducing domestic work and providing jobs as professors\, engineers\, chemists\, and businesspeople. And it has something to teach us today. \nIn the surprising\, often fiercely feminist and always fascinating The Secret History of Home Economics\, Danielle Dreilinger traces the field’s history from Black colleges to Eleanor Roosevelt to Okinawa\, from a Betty Crocker brigade to DIY techies. These women―and they were mostly women―became chemists and marketers\, studied nutrition\, health\, and exercise\, tested parachutes\, created astronaut food\, and took bold steps in childhood development and education. \nHome economics followed the currents of American culture even as it shaped them. Dreilinger brings forward the racism within the movement along with the strides taken by women of color who were influential leaders and innovators. She also looks at the personal lives of home economics’ women\, as they chose to be single\, share lives with other women\, or try for egalitarian marriages. \nThis groundbreaking and engaging history restores a denigrated subject to its rightful importance\, as it reminds us that everyone should learn how to cook a meal\, balance their account\, and fight for a better world. \n\nIf you have any questions or would like to get on the email list for the Book Club\, please contact Deirdre at the library. You can email whitinglibrary1@gmail.com or call 875-2277.
