SUMMARY:June 2021 Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club is holding our monthly book discussion live on Zoom. The book pick for June is Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman. This novel published in 2007 centers on a blossoming romantic relationship between an intellectually precocious and curious 17-year-old American-Italian Jewish boy named Elio Perlman and a visiting 24-year-old American Jewish scholar named Oliver in 1980s Italy. The novel chronicles their summer romance and the 20 years that follow. The psychological maneuvers that accompany attraction have seldom been more shrewdly captured than in André Aciman’s frank\, unsentimental\, heartrending elegy to human passion.  \nPlease feel free to join the group\, all are welcome! If you need a copy to read\, Whiting Library has copies ready to lend. Just give us a call or shoot us an email and we will put it out for Front Porch Pick Up when available. \nIf you have any questions or would like to get on the email list for the Book Club\, please contact Deirdre at the library. You can email whitinglibrary1@gmail.com or call 875-2277. \n  \nThe Zoom Meeting login information is here: \nTopic: Whiting Library Book Club\nTime: April 20 2021 06:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81900041488 \nMeeting ID: 819 0004 1488

SUMMARY:May 2021 Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club holds our monthly discussions live on Zoom on the third Tuesday of each month. The book pick for May is The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. We will gather on Zoom on Tuesday\, May 18th at 6pm to talk all about it. \n“The Woman in White is Wilkie Collins’s fifth published novel\, written in 1859. It is considered to be among the first mystery novels and is widely regarded as one of the first (and finest) in the genre of “sensation novels”. The story is sometimes considered an early example of detective fiction with protagonist Walter Hartright employing many of the sleuthing techniques of later private detectives.”\nWikipedia \n“The novel famously begins with Walter Hartright’s eerie encounter with The Woman in White on a moonlit London road. Engaged as a drawing master to the beautiful Laura Fairley and her half-sister Marian Halcombe\, Walter becomes embroiled in the sinister intrigues of Sir Percival Glyde and his friend Count Fosco. The ‘charming’ Count Fosco has a taste for vanilla bonbons\, white mice and poison. Pursuing questions of identity and insanity along the corridors of English country houses\, The Woman in White is blend of Gothic horror and psychological thriller.”\nBook review from The Literary Circle \nPlease feel free to join the group\, all are welcome! If you need a copy to read\, Whiting Library has copies ready to lend. Just give us a call or shoot us an email and we will put it out for Front Porch Pick Up when available. \nIf you have any questions or would like to get on the email list for the Book Club\, please contact Deirdre at the library. SUMMARY:Green Up/Seed Down Outdoor Event
DESCRIPTION:On May 1st\, 2021\, Whiting Library is throwing our 2nd annual Green Up Day celebration on the front lawn of the library at 117 Main St. from 10am-2pm. This fun event is for all ages and one of the venues in Chester where you can pick up your special green trash bag for the 51st annual Vermont Green Up Day. Join us and get involved with this much-loved\, spring clean-up tradition that activates thousands of Vermonters to take care of their communities by picking up roadside litter. Keeping our environment clean is good for our health\, good for businesses\, and good for our property values. Together we build pride in our cities and towns and teach our youth about powerful civic engagement that affects climate change. \nThis event will also feature a hands on seed planting demonstration and activity area for anyone who wants to plant some seeds to bring home. We will have flowers and herbs you can plant in biodegradable containers that transfer directly to your garden when the ground is ready for gardening. There will also be a small selection of already sprouted seedlings for anyone wanting a sure thing to bring home! \nDuring this outdoor event\, we will bring out as many books from the basement book sale as we can carry in order to do a little spring cleaning. The book sale will be by donation and all proceeds from the sale will go towards buying materials and supplies for the library. Come with a reusable bag to load up with great reads from out book sale\, including fiction and non-fiction for both adults and children. \nLet’s celebrate Green Up Day together!

SUMMARY:April Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Whiting Library Book Club holds our monthly discussions live on Zoom on the third Tuesday of each month. The book pick for April is Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. We will gather on Zoom on Tuesday\, April 20th at 6pm to talk all about it. \n“Fifteen-year-old Kambili and her older brother Jaja lead a privileged life in Enugu\, Nigeria. They live in a beautiful house\, with a caring family\, and attend an exclusive missionary school. They’re completely shielded from the troubles of the world. Yet\, as Kambili reveals in her tender-voiced account\, things are less perfect than they appear. Although her Papa is generous and well respected\, he is fanatically religious and tyrannical at home—a home that is silent and suffocating. \nAs the country begins to fall apart under a military coup\, Kambili and Jaja are sent to their aunt\, a university professor outside the city\, where they discover a life beyond the confines of their father’s authority. Books cram the shelves\, curry and nutmeg permeate the air\, and their cousins’ laughter rings throughout the house. When they return home\, tensions within the family escalate\, and Kambili must find the strength to keep her loved ones together. \nPurple Hibiscus is an exquisite novel about the emotional turmoil of adolescence\, the powerful bonds of family\, and the bright promise of freedom” (from Goodreads) \nPlease feel free to join the group\, all are welcome! If you need a copy to read\, Whiting Library has copies ready to lend. Just give us a call or shoot us an email and we will put it out for Front Porch Pick Up when available. \nIf you have any questions or would like to get on the email list for the Book Club\, please contact Deirdre at the library.
