Join us at Whiting Library for a summer filled with reading, creativity, and discovery! Our Summer Reading Challenge encourages people of all ages to keep reading and learning all summer long with free activities, lively programs, and fun at your public library!
📚 How Does the Summer Reading Challenge Work?
- Register for the 2026 Summer Challenge (link to the registration form here). Select your reading challenge!
- Challenge yourself to complete your “Unearth A Story” reading challenge by reading, writing, and completing fun activities.
- Visit the Whiting Library for outdoor and indoor events. Link to our Events Calendar here.
- Explore reading material at the library or online!
- Turn in your completed reading log for a prize by August 1st!
- Have fun!

Summer Reading Challenge Kick Off: Unearth A Story! June 27.
Kick off your summer of reading at Whiting Library! Kids are invited to drop in and sign up for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge running from June 27 to August 1.
Make it your own by decorating a personalized fabric book bag, pick up your reading challenge materials, and browse for books to get started right away. Participants can choose the reading challenge that best fits their interests and goals, there’s something for everyone!
- Decorate Your Own Fabric Book Bag
- Kids Adopt a Dino Reading Buddy w/ Photo Op
- Hike the Dinosaur Scavenger Hunt on Brookside Trail
- The Nature Museum programs held every Wednesday at 1PM, 6/24 – 8/5
Stop by, get inspired, and start your summer reading adventure with us! Make reading a part of your daily summer adventure! The Summer Reading Challenge is all about spending time reading each day this summer and turning reading into a habit kids will love.
Saturday, August 1 drop in any time to celebrate Summer Reading Success with us!
See Carrie King, Youth Services Librarian, to pick up your summer reading challenge prize during the last week of July if you aren’t able to attend on August 1st.
🌿 Weekly Nature Museum Programs
We’re excited to host The Nature Museum for a weekly series of hands-on environmental education programs—perfect for curious minds K through elementary! Held rain or shine, indoors or out, each Wednesday at 1 PM from June 24 to August 5. Come explore stories, science, and the natural wonders of Northern New England.
