Whiting Library

Whiting Library offers patrons downloadable e-books and audiobooks through ListenUp! Vermont, powered by Overdrive. ListenUp! Vermont is a project of the Green Mountain Library Consortium (GMLC). E-books and audiobooks are accessible online 24/7! All you need is the patron number on the back of your Whiting Library card. Your PIN is your last name and case sensitive. If you need further assistance, please get in touch with the library. To listen to it on your smart device, you will need to download the Libby app, which is free in the App Store.

Project Gutenberg is a volunteer effort to digitize and archive cultural works to “encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks.” It was founded in 1971 by American writer Michael S. Hart and is the oldest digital library. Most of the items in its collection are the full texts of books in the public domain.

Introducing your newest e-reader, the Palace app! This service uses one platform to provide content from the Vermont State Library collection, Green Mountain Library Consortium’s OverDrive (Libby), Baker & Taylor, Digital Public Library of America, and Palace Marketplace, which includes content from Amazon Publishing, Audible, and the Indie Author Project. To borrow material,  download the Palace Project App and log in with your library card number and PIN or create an account after selecting your home library. Browse thousands of offerings, searching by title, author, category, and much more. Materials are available for all ages, in multiple languages, and with various accessibility features.

Access the most searched magazines across Gale OneFile focusing on current events, sports, science, and health issues.

You can read articles by issue from many popular magazines, including The New York Times, Economist, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Highlights for Children, National Review, and Runner’s World. Articles may be a day or two behind. Some other magazines are available, but have an embargo period (often 1, 6, or 12 months), or no availability at some point.

1. Under Publication Search, click List All Publications, and then browse or enter the name of the magazine/newspaper you are looking for and click search.
2. Click on the magazine/newspaper you want, and select an issue by date. You’ll see all of the articles in that issue.

You can research Vermont birth, marriage, and death records from 1909-2008 on Ancestry.com. Vermont newspapers published between 1836 and 1922 can be searched as part of the National Digital Newspaper Program organized by the Library of Congress.

You need an account to sign in to the poral. You can create a Gale user account, or use your Google or Microsoft account to sign in. You must be 13 years or older and have your parent or guardian create your account if you are below 18.

This site offers courses, from office skills to algebra, baking to self-help, spiritual studies to painting. Though classes are not for college credit, they are led by a real instructor with whom you communicate through the site. Courses allow you to proceed at your own pace, working on assignments anytime, day or night. You have up to six months to complete a class and can enroll in up to five courses at a time.
