Resources for Persons with Dementia or Needing Memory Care Support

Image showing Memory Care Kits at Whiting Library. Kits are contained in a bag. Each kit has puzzles, games, or manipulatives. The Memory Collection has been created to support at-home caregivers and professional caregivers, as well as to provide items to engage those living with dementia. It is located in the Suzy Forlie Room.

Items from the Memory Collection are available for loan to all Whiting Library cardholders at no cost through the library’s holds service, making these items accessible to those who may not have the means to purchase them on their own and giving others a chance to “try before they buy.” This collection was developed with funds provided by Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities grant.

In March, 2024, Whiting Library was selected as one of 310 libraries to participate in round two of Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities, an  American Library Association (ALA) initiative that provides community engagement and accessibility resources to small and rural libraries to help them better serve people with disabilities.

The competitive award came with a $20,000 grant that will help the library make improvements to the library for accessibility and to develop programs for community members with age-related disabilities.
