Resources for Persons with Limited Mobility

  • Fully accessible building with wheelchair ramp and elevator. In the winter time, it is advisable to call the library at 802-875-2277 to verify that the library is open and that the accessibility paths are clear.
  • Accessible parking is available in front of Whiting on Main Street and in the library’s parking lot.
  • A walker available for in library use. If you call the library at 802-2277, we will bring it out to your car.
  • Home Services provides free  delivery to any patron in good standing who lives withing ten miles of Whiting Library according to Google Map mileage and is homebound due to temporary or permanent illness or disability.
  • Reference services by telephone, text or email.
  • Telephone and online reserves of materials.

Resources for Patrons with Print Disabilities or Visual Impairment

  • Talking Books and players, available from the Vermont Able Library.
  • Videos and DVDs with descriptive text
  • Various magnifiers for check out
  • Large print books and a collection of audiobooks and a CD player for checkout

Resources for Patrons with Learning, Cognitive, or Developmental Disabilities

  • Sensory-friendly movie screenings, workshops, computer classes, and other events for adults.
  • Sensory-friendly storytime and playtime for children

Resources for Deaf or Hard of Hearing Patrons

  • ASL interpretation if requested at least two weeks before event
  • Assistive listening devices and a hearing loop in our community room
  • Captioned videos and DVDs
  • Instructional sign language books and DVDs.

Resources for Persons with Dementia or Needing Memory Care Support

  • Our Memory Care Collection offers a variety of resources for individuals who have Alzheimer’s Disease or other forms of dementia, as well as their caregivers. The collection contains books, movies, engagement kits, puzzles, and games.
  • Whiting Library offers dementia friendly programming such as movies, story and book explorations, and art activities.

In March, 2024, Whiting Library was selected as one of 310 libraries to participate in round two of Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities, an  American Library Association (ALA) initiative that provides community engagement and accessibility resources to small and rural libraries to help them better serve people with disabilities.

The competitive award came with a $20,000 grant that will help the library make improvements to the library for accessibility and to develop programs for community members with age-related disabilities.
